Abundant sunshine. UV Index of 5. NW wind 10-20mph. High of 60 cooling off to around 40. I don't know about you all but that all sounds like THE PERFECT weather to drink 3-14 beers at a tailgate. Not to mention that it is a night game as well! What did we do to deserve such a perfect situation?! Probably suffered through years and years of mediocre football. But hey! If this is the benefit of all that suffering it may just be worth it. Everyone knows that beer tastes good in any weather, but there is something about cooler weather that makes a Busch Light or a Michelob Ultra just hit outrageously different.
I looked for some science to back this feeling up as this famously is Jack's SCIENCE Corner. That research led me to a study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Division of Gastroenterology where they studied climate linked to alcohol intake. I'm not gonna bore you with the details, but basically they found that in colder weather with less sunlight, people drink more. This is the first weekend of football where the weather is going to be colder and we're gonna have less sunlight (night game, idiots). That sounds like a perfect storm.
Now you may be asking: "but Jack, why do people drink more in colder weather?" Well, I have your answer, nerds. Vasodilation. Ever heard of her? Me either, but the article I read said that: Alcohol is a vasodilator – it increases the flow of warm blood to the skin, which is full of temperature sensors – so drinking can increase feelings of warmth. In Siberia (or Iowa) that could be pleasant, but not so much in the Sahara. The article also talks about cirrhosis and depression but we're not gonna focus on that.
So, go out there this weekend, soak up that perfect beer drinking weather, and tailgate your little butts off. We don't get many weekends like this so let's enjoy mafia!
